What is Speciality Diabetic Eye Center(SDEC) ?

Treatment of Diabetic Retinopathy is a lengthy and cumbersome process and patients need constant motivation and follow-ups to see results. Dr. Shrutika and and her dedicated team are determined to ensure that through team effort of the patient, patients family, doctor and Asian eye team, we overcome the visual disability caused by diabetic eye disease.

Patients are also actively involved in the treatment ensuring adequate blood sugar control and systemic parameters control; whereas we strive to give patients individualized holistic treatment along with constant follow up calls, motivational counselling and guidance from our side.

India is known as the diabetic capital of the world. The prevalence of diabetes is on a constant rise and a diabetic patient is at risk of long-term problems affecting the eye. Keeping this in mind Asian Eye has created a Speciality Diabetic Eye Care Centre (SDEC) under the aegis of Dr. Shrutika Kankariya Founder & Dirctor Asian Eye Hospital.
Diabetes can affect your eyes in many ways, from eyelid margin anteriorly to optic nerve posteriorly. A regular eye checkup performed for a non-diabetic patient may not be sufficient for a diabetic patient. This is why the idea of SDEC emerged to give due importance and attention deserved by these patients. It is one of a kind facility with state of the art equipment and highly trained doctors to make your treatments smooth and effective.
There is a detailed documentation done for every patient that walks up to SDEC. Once the patient comes in, a registration form is filled that includes parameters such as hemoglobin % age (HB), fasting ,post prandial blood sugar (FBS, PPBS), HbA1C (i.e. Glycosylated hemoglobin % ( which gives us an idea of average sugar control is last 3 months), blood pressure (BP), urea /creatinine levels diabetic nephropathy status, alternative therapies and lifestyle modification. This information allows us to think in a holistic manner for the patient.
A primary check-up at SDEC includes examination of 12 tests. Examination of lids, eye surface, extra ocular motility (to look for diabetic vasculopathy related eye muscle paresis), pupil examination (indication of optic neuropathy and glaucoma) and gonioscopy. This is followed by pupil dilation with specific drops. Other tests include a detailed funduscopy (Retina examination), optic nerve head examination etc. which help in categorizing patients into proliferative diabetic retinopathy and non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy.
Treatment occurs at par with international protocols and all the specialized facilities which are available at Asian eye hospital. (Refer to our treatment section for more information.) Dr Shrutika Kankariya believes that, once the patient becomes a part of the SDEC clinic, it becomes her and her staff’s responsibility to take care of the patient until he/she is completely cured. She believes patients with diabetes have multiple other problems and we need to understand these patients from a psychological point of view as well. Stress can be major hindrance in the successful outcome of the treatment. The patients need assurance that with continued care they will be able to see better and not loose their eyesight.
The major constraint for successful treatment is irregular follow up and casual attitude of patient towards their own eyes. Hence we proactively follow up with these patients, counsel them, motivate them, and give realistic hopes. Counselling involves making patients understand the chronic nature of the disease, possibility of severe vision loss if appropriate timely treatment is not done. We give appropriate guidance to control their blood sugar levels, other and guide to appropriate diabetes specialist depending upon the situation. Please refer to understanding treatment of diabetic retinopathy section for more information.

WHAT IS THE RIGHT TIME TO
CONSULT A SPECIALIST?

  • A regular consultation once you are diagnosed to have diabetes is necessary.
  • Diabetic retinopathy starts at the side of the retina, not the macula (center of retina) therefore the disease might already be present without the patient even realizing.
  • Loss / any harm caused to vision is irreversible as retina cells are non-regenerative.
So if you haven’t visited a specialist, visit one now.
